Canada’s Hamelin brothers are already serving notice to the speedskating world that they going to be a force on the short-track World Cup circuit.

Charles Hamelin posted the fastest time in the men's 1,000m qualification heats Friday at the World Cup Short Track season opener in China.

Brother François Hamelin was third fastest overall, 7-10ths of a second behind the best time set by Charles. Seoung Il Kim of South Korea was second quickest.

"The women were in control of their means, managing their energy properly, keeping in mind there are three days left to the competition," explained Sébastien Cros, Canada's women short track coach. "The ice conditions are not ideal, it's fairly soft, but that's the same for everybody."
