He's a world-class speed skater with several Cornwall connections.
Nicolas Bean also has connections to Italy -- and that's a very good thing.
Bean, over a year ago, sized up what was a crowded stable of talented Canadian speed skaters. So the Gloucester resident got to work on becoming a member of Team Italy, the country his grandfather was raised in.
"It's been one of the best (sports) experiences of my life (competing for Italy), and it was probably one of the best decisions (to get Italian citizenship),'' said Bean, 21, who was 22nd overall on the World Cup circuit last winter.
''I was close (to the Olympics with Team Canada) but not close enough,'' Bean said, who, with his father Tony's support -- Tony and Danielle, Nicolas' parents, are formerly of Cornwall -- pushed the plan to get Italian citizenship forward.
