In a career that brought him five Stanley Cups and two trips to the Olympics, one faceoff still stands out for Randy Gregg.
It happened in his basement.
Gregg was playing with sons Jamie and Ryan, then aged 5 and 4. As they got ready to drop the puck for their regular game of floor hockey, Jamie declared, "Dad, I want to be Mark Messier."
Added Ryan: "Dad, I want to be Jeff Beukeboom."
...
"I thought it was kinda neat because one thing we didn't want is our sons or daughters to be somebody's child; we want them to be their own person," Gregg said.
Still, there is one area in which three of the four Gregg kids want to be just like Mom and Dad – they want to be Canadian Olympians.
