Speed skater makes national team

Yellowknifer Michael Gilday skated his way onto Canada's national short track speed skating team and a possible spot at the 2010 Winter Olympics last weekend.He finished second place overall at the national team trials in Trois Rivières, Que. Of the top 10 ranked skaters, Gilday was the only one not from Quebec.[...] "We're very pleased. We knew going in he was in a good position to make it," said Gilday, who is involved in coaching with NWT Speed Skating, a program which his son went through.

Speed skater Michael Gilday of Yellowknife set a world record in the 1000-metre race in Calgary in October 2007.

(Take note the final decision in order to be in the National or Development Team will be taken at the end of April. By now the ranking is not secure) SB

Yellowknife speed skating sensation Michael Gilday has made NWT history as the first Northern speed skater to make the national short track team. He is ranked sixth in the country following the national team trials series. The top eight skaters in the nation are named to the team.
