Jean change les plans de Hamelin, pendant que la patineuse locale Jessica Hewitt se qualifie pour les coupes du monde

Charles Hamelin (Ste-Julie, QC) espérait remporter six victoires en autant de courses à la Sélection pour les coupes du monde d’automne en patinage de vitesse courte piste, mais Olivier Jean (Lachenaie, QC) s’est assuré que ça n’arrive pas en remportant le 500m aujourd’hui, au Pacific Coliseum.

The doubts came when Jean, a 24-year-old member of Canada's short track speedskating team, was lying in a Montreal hospital following surgery on his ankle - the result of a severe skate cut in an August, 2007 training accident that sliced through his Kevlar guard and severed a tendon.
Thursday, Jean proved he's all the way back as he completed three days of World Cup team trials at the Pacific Coliseum with a total of two victories and three second-places finishes. That was good enough to see him named by Speed Skating Canada to its team for this season's World Cup circuit, which begins with an event in Salt Lake City Oct. 17-19.

"We're really happy for Olivier," he said. "We knew the rehab went well, but you don't know for sure until he competes. We were very pleased with the commitment he showed and the effort he put in. It took a lot of work on his part."

Confident Jean rebounds nicely from nasty injury

Olivier Jean admits to a few moments of doubt and despair. However, they didn't last for long.
The doubts came when Jean, a 24-year-old member of Canada's short track speed skating team, was lying in a Montreal hospital following surgery on his ankle -- the result of a severe skate cut in an August, 2007 training accident that sliced through his Kevlar guard and severed a tendon.[...]
Jean says he decided to put the time when he wasn't able to be on skates to good use.
"I knew I couldn't do the physical part of training so I did the other parts," he said. "I worked on the things I could do, like improving my nutrition. I also did mental training, going over in my mind what I needed to do when I came back. As a result, I think I'm a more complete skater today that I was before I got hurt."Jean wants to do well on this year's World Cup circuit, but maintains he's more concerned about being at his peak when the 2010 Games begin.

Denton told a Vancouver Board of Trade lunch crowd that VANOC has tailored ticket packages for people who live in the Vancouver area, as well as those from other parts of Canada.
Canadian short-track speed skater Amanda Overland, who won a silver medal at the Turin Olympics, told the crowd that for an athlete, having a big crowd is very positive.

Canadian short-track speed skater Amanda Overland, who won a silver medal at the Turin Olympics, told the crowd that for an athlete, having a big crowd is very positive.
The Olympics "is going to be an experience of a lifetime," she said of competing on home soil. "I want you to know how honoured we are to be competing at home."Tickets go on sale on Oct. 3, and there is a choice of 58 Olympic Experience Packages, or OEPs.

PVC - Charles Hamelin (Ste-Julie, QC) a continué sa domination des sélections pour les coupes du monde de l’automne aujourd’hui au Pacific Coliseum, remportant deux courses de plus, lui en donnant quatre sur quatre jusqu’à date. À la fin de la journée, quatre athlètes ont été nommés au sein de l’équipe de Coupe du monde de l’automne, en fonction de leurs résultats sur 1500m hier et aujourd’hui : Valérie Maltais (La Baie, QC), Marie-Andrée Mendes-Campeau (Montréal, QC), Hamelin et Olivier Jean (Lachenaie, QC).

La saison de compétition de patinage de vitesse sur courte piste se déroule jusqu'à jeudi à Vancouver pour les meilleurs patineurs canadiens, dont les Sherbrookois Alex Boisvert-Lacroix et Valérie Lambert, qui bataillent pour une place au sein de l'équipe canadienne qui participera aux Coupes du monde de l'automne. Boisvert-Lacroix ne s'en fait pas trop avec les résultats parce que s'il devait rater l'équipe de Coupe du monde, il pourrait tout de même se retrouver au sein de celle qui participera aux Universiades, en février prochain, en Chine.
Valérie Lambert participe à la sélection, mais elle traverse des moments difficiles et se sent extrêmement fatiguée.
"Je me suis beaucoup entraînée cet été et tout allait bien en début de saison mais, depuis un mois et demi, je suis surentraînée. J'en ai fait plus que mon corps pouvait en prendre. Je suis extrêmement fatiguée et j'ai dû manquer plusieurs sessions d'entraînement récemment", explique la patineuse sherbrookoise.Elle n'avait toutefois pas perdu espoir.

Canada's World Cup team for the upcoming short track speed skating season is being decided on Pacific Coliseum ice.
The 12 skaters -- six men and six women -- who will represent Canada on the 2008-09 World Cup circuit will be picked from a three-day selection camp, which began Tuesday and continues through Thursday and which is open to the public.
According to Yves Hamelin, Speed Skating Canada's short track program director, the World Cup team will be chosen at the conclusion of the camp and will be composed of skaters who finish either first or second in the trial races.
"It's wonderful to be able to compete on this ice a year and a half before the Olympic Games and to give our athletes a taste of the facility," says Hamelin. "We have agreat partnership with the Pacific National Exhibition and we really appreciate the interest they are taking in our team."Short track tix

Both Val and Anne Maltais fell on the last lap. The race was stopped and re-started with V. Maltais dq'ed. V. Maltais was attempting to go 3rd to 1st on the bell, ahead of St. Gelais and A. Maltais.
Waddell was dq the 2nd time around.
